Ethical decision-making is a process with a guiding framework that is used when difficult situations present themselves. It helps the care team communicate effectively and transparently with family members or surrogates of loved ones who are facing end-of-life situations. 

Join Mindy Nelkin, D. Bioethics, RD, HEC-C, for a webinar that will discuss the framework and guiding principles of ethical decision-making that RDs may face as members of the care team treating patients or clients in end-of-life situations. Mindy's presentation will center around the practical application of clinical bioethics in the health care setting, and she will discuss the role of the RD in ethical decision-making. She will define clinical bioethics, detail the philosophy of Principlism and its four principles, and walk participants through how to implement the process of ethical analysis. Mindy will also detail the differences between the codes of ethics of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, nutrition professionals should be better able to:

  1. Define and discuss bioethics.
  2. Detail the philosophy of Principlism and discuss its four principles.
  3. Understand and implement the process of ethical analysis.
  4. Detail the differences between the codes of ethics of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

Mindy NelkinMindy Nelkin, D. Bioethics, RD, HEC-C, is a registered dietitian and Certified Healthcare Ethics Consultant. She received a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Dietetics from Michigan State University, a master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from Rush University College of Health Sciences, a second master’s degree in Clinical Bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Center for the Study of Bioethics, and her doctor of bioethics from Loyola University’s Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy.

Mindy served on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Code of Ethics Task Force from 2016-2018. She is currently a Medical Ethicist at Northwell Health and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Science Education at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University.
