This continuing education course examines the role of calcium in health and disease. It provides information to help RDs better assess client calcium status in relation to age and gender, help clients adjust calcium intake, and make appropriate recommendations for calcium supplementation.

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:

  1. Identify differences in calcium intake needs at various stages of the life cycle.
  2. Describe the role of calcium in bone formation and differentiate between bone modeling and bone remodeling.
  3. Define the advantages and disadvantages of at least two forms of calcium supplements.
  4. List five nondairy sources of calcium, including at least one appropriate for persons of a non-North American-predominant culture.
  5. Recommend appropriate dietary calcium intake or supplementation for a variety of intake preferences and health conditions.
  6. Counsel clients about the role of dietary calcium in kidney stone formation.
