This continuing education course describes the development of aquaculture as an important contributor to the US and world supply of fish and seafood. The course discusses the environmental, sustainability, and food safety concerns associated with aquaculture and the ways the aquaculture industry has evolved to address them.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:
- Identify the role aquaculture has in the world and US food supplies.
- Describe the predominant aquaculture practices used by the commercial aquaculture industry and the challenges these practices present.
- Identify the regulatory and oversight framework that assures the safety of aquaculture seafood.
- Identify the sustainability and environmental concerns and challenges of the aquaculture industry and programs that address these issues.
- Recognize and interpret misconceptions and misinformation regarding the safety and nutrient contribution of fish/seafood sourced from aquaculture.
