This continuing education course reviews the scientific evidence concerning breakfast consumption in relationship to weight management, examines the need for and composition of breakfast, evaluates the physiological and physical influence of breakfast, and assesses the impact breakfast has on appetite hormones and energy intake.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:
- Identify health and lifestyle characteristics of habitual breakfast consumers and breakfast skippers.
- Describe the importance of consistency with respect to breakfast consumption.
- Evaluate presumptions vs evidence-based research regarding breakfast and weight management and apply findings to counseling in a public health or private practice setting.
- Explain the effects of breakfast consumption and omission on satiety, energy intake, hunger hormones, cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
- Identify the ideal macronutrient balance of breakfast and provide specific examples to clients.
