Two of a Kind: Celiac Disease and Thyroid Disease

This continuing education course reviews the overlapping symptoms, examines the current research on the relationship between these diseases, explores how a gluten-free diet affects both conditions, discusses the impact of ATD on diet, and describes the ways in which RDs can most effectively support their clients.

Course content was written by Cheryl Harris, MPH, RD, a dietitian in private practice in Alexandria and Fairfax, Virginia. She specializes in helping people live and love a gluten-free diet, represents the mid-Atlantic region for the Celiac Sprue Association board, is a nutrition advisor for DC Celiacs, and speaks locally and nationally on celiac disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:

  1. Identify common symptoms of autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) and celiac disease.
  2. Name reasons for referring patients for cross-screening of these conditions.
  3. Identify common nutritional concerns on a gluten-free diet.
  4. Identify nutrients of concern for people with ATD.
