The World Health Organization estimates that in 2020, 149.2 million children under 5 years of age were too short for their age (stunting), 45.4 million were too thin for their height (wasting) and 38.9 million were too heavy for their height (overweight).1 Health care practitioners know that the early years of life are a dynamic time, with children experiencing rapid changes in growth, physical ability, behavioral and cognitive development, and nutritional needs. That’s why diagnosing pediatric malnutrition is essential to provide the highest quality care for this vulnerable population.
On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, from 2-3:30 p.m. ET, join Andie Lee Gonzalez, PhD, MPH, RDN, LDN, FAND, for a webinar that will provide an overview of pediatric malnutrition trends and prevalence. Andie will review current literature that supports pediatric malnutrition screening tools, explain various intervention strategies, and discuss ways the health care team can collaborate to improve patient outcomes. Andie will explore alternative assessment tools and best practices that will help practitioners from all disciplines put key learnings into clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
After attending this session, health care professionals should be able to:
- Explain the current trends and prevalence of pediatric malnutrition.
- Review current pediatric nutrition assessment screening tools and physical assessment screening, including how to evaluate weight, muscle, and fat loss, and micronutrient status in pediatric patients.
- Compare and contrast pediatric malnutrition screening tools.
- Counsel clients on the best practices and resources that can be used to improve malnutrition outcomes.
- Implement techniques to collaborate successfully with members of the health care team.

Dr. Andie Lee Gonzalez is a native of South Texas. Currently she is a Pediatric Medical Science Liaison for Abbott Nutrition. As a first-generation Latina college student, she was accepted to Michigan State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. She then completed her Dietetic internship rotation program and her Master’s in Public Health from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Gonzalez then completed her doctorate in Organizational Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2018 and in 2019 completed a certificate in Business Analytics from Michigan State University.
Through her experiences, Andie has developed a strong purpose and passion for public health, community, and nutrition. In addition, she is a PRN Registered Dietitian at Complete Nutrition Solutions and teaches at South Texas College Department of Medical and Health Services Management.
