Recorded Webinar: Dietary Supplement Use in Older Adults: Help, Hype, or Hope?

Seventy-nine percent of adults over the age of 55 take dietary supplements with the goal of improving health. How can health professionals help clients and consumers wade through the sea of supplements and their myriad claims for healthy aging and increased longevity?

Dr. Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RDN, LD, FAND, will deliver a webinar focusing on dietary supplement use in older adults. She will dive into the research that supports (or refutes) supplements’ claims and the potential interactions with prescription and over-the-counter medicines taken concurrently with supplements. She will also cover supplement forms, dosage, and deliver a risk/benefit evaluation that will arm dietetics professionals with pertinent information on the most popular supplements, including multivitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, fish oil, turmeric, CoQ10, and probiotics. Finally, Dr. Rosenbloom will review case studies and provide evidence-based resources that will help expand attendees’ knowledge of proper supplement use.

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be able to: 

  1. Understand the regulations governing dietary supplements in the U.S.
  2. Discuss the research that supports the use of common dietary supplements by older adults.
  3. Recognize the potential hazards of polypharmacy when multiple dietary supplements, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications are ingested.
  4. List evidence-based resources on dietary supplements.

Dr. Christine RosenbloomDr. Christine Rosenbloom is president of Chris Rosenbloom Food and Nutrition Services, LLC and nutrition professor emerita at Georgia State University. She is the co-author with Dr. Bob Murray of the consumer book, “Food & Fitness After 50.”

Dr. Rosenbloom held various teaching and administrative positions, including department chair and associate dean. She was the sports dietitian for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and for the Georgia State athletes. She is the editor-in-chief of two editions of “Sports Nutrition: A Practice Manual for Professionals,” and served as assistant editor for the 6th edition released in 2017. As an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Chris received the Medallion Award in 2019 for lifetime achievement in the profession. She received her undergraduate degree from Kent State University and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Minnesota; her doctorate was earned in sociology with a gerontology concentration from Georgia State University.
