This continuing education course explores the research about and controversy surrounding the use of the neutropenic diet for oncology patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. It also provides insight into the movement to educate patients about food safety guidelines as a replacement for the neutropenic diet.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:
- Define neutropenia.
- Describe the relationship between neutropenia and the increased risk of bacterial translocation from food sources.
- Identify three practical ways to educate individuals on food safety guidelines.
- Discuss the limitations of the current research regarding the use of the neutropenic diet.
