Prescription Medications and Weight Gain: The Secret Side Effect

This continuing education course reviews the current literature on weight gain related to common prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications and suggests opportunities for nutrition interventions targeted at minimizing the impact of this unwanted and often-unknown side effect. It aims to help nutrition professionals understand some of the relationships between commonly prescribed and OTC medications and weight gain.
 

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be able to:
 

  1. Identify medications within each drug class that may contribute to weight gain.
  2. Assess the level of influence of specific drugs on clients' weight status.
  3. Explain the mechanisms of medication-induced weight gain.
  4. Suggest targeted nutrition interventions for medication-induced weight gain and related changes in appetite.

Lisa S. Brown, PhD, RD, LDN; Emily Trussler, MS; and Danielle Gale, MS, RDN, LDNBrown, is an associate professor of nutrition at Simmons College in Boston, has worked in a variety of clinical and community settings including WIC and long term care and maintains a small private practice at the MetroWest YMCA in Framingham, Massachusetts. Trussler recently completed a master’s degree in nutrition and health promotion at Simmons College and is a dietetic intern at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Gale recently completed her dietetic internship and works as an inpatient clinical dietitian at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
