Recorded Webinar: Transforming the Mindset of Hunger

Hunger lurks everywhere in the United States- and few of us feel it. Approximately 40 million people, including 12 million children, struggle to find their next meal. Yet, most health care professionals initially promote the consumption of produce to prevent and manage chronic disease instead of assessing for food access first.

In this presentation, Clancy Cash Harrison, MS, RDN, FAND, will review two common misconceptions surrounding food insecurity and explain how making one simple change will improve health outcomes. This topic will be examined even further by Clancy in another upcoming presentation.

Dietitians, regardless of practice specialty, counsel and educate clients struggling to feed themselves and their families. This webinar will inspire participants to identify and transform counseling techniques for food-insecure clients at risk of malnutrition.

Attendees will be able to bridge the knowledge gap between the overall health of clients and food insecurity. Clancy will demonstrate how effective community partnerships and the use of the Food Insecurity/Food Banking Supervised Practice Concentration can help integrate more dietetic interns into the world of food insecurity within any practice setting.

In a subsequent webinar to be announced soon, Clancy will dive even deeper into the food insecurity epidemic. Her next presentation will focus on ethics, symptoms and risk factors, and the costs of allowing food insecurity to go untreated. She'll also discuss the important dynamic of patient care, sharing coping mechanisms, techniques to screen patients with sensitivity, and how to use patient-centered language to reduce the stigma.

The live version of this webinar was presented by Clancy Cash Harrison, MS, RDN, FAND on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 2-3 p.m. ET. This recorded version is approved for one hour of continuing education credit. RDs should list code 175 for this activity type.
