Symposium Session: Sarcopenia: Strategies for Prevention and Treatment

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass, was first recognized and classified in 1997. Through research and statistics, we can define the population who suffers from sarcopenia and understand the rates of muscle loss by age, yet only a small percentage of dietitians use the term in their clinical practice, indicating many cases may be left undiagnosed and untreated. In this session Sharon Collison, MS, RDN, LDN, CSSD, will define the current population suffering from sarcopenia, share the metrics by age-based muscle reduction, the disease’s effect on health care costs, and share evidence-based guidelines for prevention and treatment.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:

  1. Discuss the prevalence and health consequences of age-related sarcopenia.
  2. Understand and identify the underlying mechanisms in the development of sarcopenia.
  3. Communicate current dietary and exercise recommendations for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia to patients.
  4. Discuss pharmaceutical and novel treatments that are being researched to treat sarcopenia.

Sharon Collison, MS, RDN, LDN, CSSD, is a board-certified sports dietitian since 2008 and is the Instructor of Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition at the University of Delaware (UD), where she also teaches a sports nutrition course. She received her B.S. in Food Science and her M.S. in Human Nutrition at UD and provides medical nutrition therapy at UD’s Nutrition Clinic specializing in weight management, sports nutrition, eating disorders and disordered eating, cardiovascular nutrition, and wellness.

Sharon has written several CE courses for Today’s Dietitian focused on the health benefits of foods and spices and strategies to prevent loss of muscle mass and strength with aging. She also has written an e-book, “Nutritional Strategies for Reducing Inflammation and Enhancing Immunity in the Athlete.” Sharon provides sports nutrition services to the Delaware Blue Coats, the G-league affiliate of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. A lover of developing her own recipes, Sharon won the grand prize, $100,000, at the Southern Living Cookoff in 2005 for her chocolate coffee cheesecake with mocha sauce.
