Recorded Webinar: Go Nuts: Help Your Clients and Patients Address their Pandemic Weight Gain and Health-related Issues

This webinar was presented on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, from 2-3 pm ET.

Tree nuts have long been shown to help decrease the risk of heart disease, but researchers are now looking at their potential impact on weight, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. In a recent study, those who included mixed tree nuts in a weight management program saw significant weight loss and improved satiety.

Research has shown that more than 40 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. During the past year, many Americans have gained weight while sheltering in place, partly due to less exercise and more snacking. One study estimates a weight gain of 1.5 pounds per month. And, most people get about 25% of their calories each day from snacks and a large proportion come from desserts, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets and salty snacks. By replacing just one of those snacks with 1.5 onces of tree nuts may result in a positive impact on weight and overall health.

Presented by Zhaoping Li, MD, PhD, and Maureen Ternus, MS, RDN, this webinar will discuss the latest research on nuts and weight, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, as well as practical ways to incorporate nuts into a healthy diet.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, nutrition professionals will be better able to:

  1. Describe the evidence supporting the role of nuts in both weight management and metabolic syndrome.
  2. Identify practical ways to incorporate nuts into a healthy diet.
  3. Recognize the importance of nuts in a healthy diet.
