Symposium Session: Menopause Ahead: Exploring the Intersection of Nutrition, Health, Hormones, and Aging

This is not a webinar or course for purchase - this is a module for credit claiming for our 2022 Spring Symposium attendees and cannot be purchased or taken by non-attendees. These sessions are exclusive to our Symposium; however, the topics may be revisited in the future in the form of a webinar or self-study course.

Many women worry about the physical and emotional changes that accompany the transition through menopause and question whether midlife weight gain is just inevitable. In today’s anti-aging and nutritionally-sensationalized world, women struggle to make informed decisions about their health and are looking to clinicians for answers. Join Val Schonberg, an RD and Certified Menopause Practitioner with the North American Menopause Society, as she discusses evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle strategies that can minimize symptoms and prevent long-term health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and cancer.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:

  1. Describe the three stages of menopause and the emotional and physical changes experienced during each stage.
  2. Explain the effects changing hormones, aging, lifestyle, and dieting have on a woman's physical and emotional well-being.
  3. Recommend evidenced-based nutrition strategies and lifestyle changes that will help prevent long-term health problems associated with menopause.
  4. Counsel clients on how to balance the impact positive nutrition has on long-term health coupled with the realities of weight bias and disordered eating behaviors.
