Food Insecurity in Older Adults
This continuing education course examines the risk factors for and health effects of food insecurity in older adults, highlights available food assistance programs and their impact, and provides nutrition professionals with strategies to improve older adults’ food security.
Course content was written by Sara Chatfield, MPH, RDN, LDN, a Chicago-based freelance nutrition writer who has practiced dietetics in community and clinical settings, including transitional care units with a focus on geriatric patients.

Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:
- Describe six factors related to food insecurity (FI) in older adults.
- Explain several nutrition and health consequences of FI in older adults.
- Outline seven food assistance programs that serve older adults with FI.
- Advocate for improved food security in older adults.
