Recorded Webinar: Advancements in the Treatment of Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder: An Interdisciplinary Approach

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) was first identified in 1959; however it was not formally recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders until 2013. Dr. Christy McElroy, PsyD, and Emily Presbrey, MS, RD, LDN, provided attendees with an understanding of the signs, symptoms, and prevalence of BED, as well as information on the advances and updates in treatment. As specialists in Eating Disorder Treatment, the presenters are actively engaged in the creation and implementation of an Intensive Outpatient Binge Eating Disorder Treatment program.
The nutritional approach to treating individuals struggling with BED and how this is implemented in practice is elemental to this session. The presenters focused on the importance of treating eating disorders using an interdisciplinary team, specifically emotional eating and binge eating disorder, as well as how providers can work towards developing and applying a new standard of patient care.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be able to:
- Recognize and understand the signs, symptoms, prevalence, and approaches in the treatment of emotional eating and Binge Eating Disorder (BED).
- Explain the interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of emotional eating and BED.
- Develop a new standard of care by understanding how weight biases and health care approaches, as providers, affect the quality of care for patients.
Additional Information
Dr. Christy McElroy completed her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. Currently, Dr. McElroy works as lead clinical therapist in Naperville, IL, where she is responsible for direct patient care as well as development and implementation of evidence-based curriculum in a Binge Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program. Prior to this, she worked with individuals seeking bariatric surgery, and was responsible for creating the behavioral portion of program development for an integrative pediatric weight management clinic. In addition, Dr. McElroy works in her private practice and volunteers her time advocating for various health initiative programs in the community promoting positive body image.
Emily Presbrey, MS, RD, LDN, is a registered and licensed dietitian who specialies in eating disorder treatment. Emily earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master of Science Degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from Northern Illinois University, where she also completed a certificate in Eating Disorders and Obesity and her Dietetic Internship. Emily currently works at the Inpatient, Partial Hospitalization, and Intensive Outpatient level of care for individuals struggling with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder.
