Accurately identifying patient health literacy is an important public health task. Simply providing patient education is not enough. To positively enhance individual patient and societal health outcomes, healthcare workers must ensure that patients receive and understand accessible high-quality health information.

Brenda Hage, PhD, DNP, APRN-BC, FNP, AGPCNP-BC, serves as Director, School of Nursing at Florida Gulf Coast University where she is also a professor and the Southwest Florida Endowed Chair. Dr. Hage is a gerontologist and a nurse practitioner with clinical expertise in gerontology, rehabilitation, and family practice, and case management. Her research interests are focused on aging in place, improvement of cognition in older adults, health literacy and clear health care communication. She serves as the president of the board of directors for the Caring Community Health Care Center (CCHC) FQHC-LA clinics in Hazelton, PA, and the Kistler Clinic in Wilkes-Barre, PA and as vice chair of the Pennsylvania Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) of Northeast PA.

 

David Hage, MSW, LCSW, ACSW, C-ASWCM, is a medical social worker, gerontologist, and educator. David earned a BSW degree from Misericordia University, an MSW from Marywood University, and is at the dissertation phase of a Ph.D. in Leadership & Gerontology at Concordia University Chicago. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM), and Certified Advanced Aging Life Care Professional™ (previously called Certified Geriatric Care Manager). David serves as an Assistant Professor of Social Work, Director of Field Education and Coordinator of Gerontology Education at Misericordia University.

David is a board member and trainer for the Physician’s Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) Taskforce for Northeast PA, a regional task force committed to advanced care planning and honoring patient wishes at end-of-life. He also serves as a member of the biomedical ethics and palliative care committees at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, as an editorial advisory board member for Today’s Geriatric Medicine, and as the former chair and current member of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers Aging Committee.
