Recorded Webinar: Nutrition and Mental Health in Long Term Care

This webinar took place on June 15, 2023, from 2-3 p.m. ET.

Many of us struggled with our mental health during the pandemic, as did our patients and clients. In addition, the changes in the long-term care (LTC) landscape mean that many facilities are starting to admit patients with different health concerns - including mental health conditions - than they had in years past. While mental illnesses and the medications used to treat them can often have an effect on weight and appetite, many clinicians do not feel confident or fully knowledgeable about giving recommendations to patients as they cope with these illnesses.

Join Cassie Whitmore, RD, LMNT, for a webinar that will focus on the etiology of mental health illnesses and how these conditions can affect nutrition status. She will discuss the challenges patients and clients face and detail how RDs – in the LTC setting, as well as other health care arenas – can support and guide them to better health.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity, health care professionals and clinicians will be better able to:

  1. Discuss the mental health diagnoses most often seen in long-term care (LTC) settings.
  2. Identify the different nutrition challenges for patients and clients in LTC who have mental health diagnoses.
  3. Describe options for nutrition interventions in this population.
