Recorded Webinar: Practical Implementation of Lower Carbohydrate Diets: What You Need to Know
This webinar was presented on Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 2-3 p.m. ET.
The last decade has seen an increasing amount of published research that examines the efficacy and safety of lower carbohydrate diets. While lower carbohydrate diets are traditionally associated with weight loss, much of the recent research focuses on the alternative benefits of this dietary approach. In fact, recent studies have suggested that reducing dietary carbohydrates can benefit conditions that are related to metabolism, including metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Join Jonathan Clinthorne, PhD, and Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, as they review these recent studies and discuss the basic biology that underlies how well-formulated lower carbohydrate diets may benefit different patient populations. They will also discuss evidence gaps and how to translate observations from scientific literature into helpful advice for patients who may benefit from a lower carbohydrate diet.
After completing this activity, health care professionals will be better able to:
- Describe the variety of approaches that constitute lower carbohydrate diets.
- Discuss the evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of lower carbohydrate diets for specific populations.
- Educate and counsel patients on the practical aspects of implementing a carbohydrate restricted approach.
Jonathan Clinthorne, PhD, received his doctorate in Human Nutrition from Michigan State University for his work focusing on metabolism and immune function. He then completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical campus where he studied the interaction of diet, immunity, and the gut microbiota. His research has been published in several top-tier journals including the Journal of Nutrition and the Journal of Immunology. Now, as the Director of Nutrition for Simply Good Foods USA, Jon’s work is focused on sharing the numerous ways a low carb or low sugar lifestyle can promote everyday wellness. In addition, he is also responsible for managing relationships with researchers and health care professionals to help promote the clinical evidence demonstrating the benefits of low-carbohydrate diets for managing obesity and diabetes. When not working, you can find Jon running, skiing, and biking in the mountains of Colorado.
