This continuing education course reviews the different types of adipose tissue and their related functions. This course also focuses on the role human brown adipose tissue, a recently rediscovered type of adipose tissue, could play in the prevention of obesity and diabetes.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:

  1. State the relation between adipose tissue and chronic disease.
  2. Compare the different types of adipose tissue (white, brown, beige) in humans.
  3. Assess the role of brown adipose tissue as a target against obesity and diabetes.
  4. Explain the effect of different lifestyle interventions on adipose tissue metabolism.
