Sugary drinks are a major source of calories and added sugars in the American diet, and restaurants play an important role in shaping the overall food environment, which can influence what we pour in our cup. Learn how Panera, a national restaurant company with over 2,000 locations, is educating consumers and making it easier for them to rethink their drink. In this session, Panera’s Nutrition Manager will present preliminary data that suggest small changes at the beverage station, like transparent labeling of calories and added sugar and the introduction of enticing lower-sugar options, can positively influence consumer behavior without negatively impacting business.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the benefits of transparent labeling and the impact of offering better-for-you options to meet consumers where they're at.

2. Identify the potential impact of restaurant initiatives on purchasing decisions.

3. Outline ways RDs can work with restaurants to educate consumers and impact their choices in a positive way.
