After being interviewed for thousands of stories for all forms of media, I want to share some of the situations I’ve faced so that RDNs could follow in kind to explore their own paths to getting media exposure while also helping them learn how to deal with the challenges and responsibilities of what it takes to be a media dietitian nutritionist.

This session will uncover the following topics and much more: the challenge that comes along with the glamour of working with media; how media has changed over the years and therefore RDNs must change along with technology and how to speak in your audience’s language; how you need to craft messages differently for various forms of media (TV, radio, magazines and print, web stories, podcasts, social platforms, etc)—all platforms will be touched upon.

Additional topics covered include: how to craft sensational soundbites that compete with false promises; how to become a media-maker and connect with editors and producers to get your voice heard; how to not be taken advantage of by journalists when it comes to giving media interviews; and how to interpret and undo misleading headlines to clear up consumer confusion and instead be the bearer of news people can actually use.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:

  1. Search for newsworthy stories to talk about to media.
  2. Create a pitch and learn who to pitch your story ideas to.
  3. Overcome the barriers you face when it comes to working with media.
