Recorded Symposium Session: Let's Talk Detox! How RDNs Can Reclaim the Cleanse

For many, the word “detox” conjures up images of snake oil and flashy websites with unsubstantiated claims. However, the biochemical process of supporting detoxification in the liver and kidneys for example,  is a vital part of the body’s ability to eliminate toxicants effectively and neutralize oxidative stress from internal and external forces. RDNs need to be equipped with accurate information – not only about what can hamper detoxification, but also what can enhance it, so they can help patients differentiate fad from fact, and provide evidenced-based tools patients can use to optimize their health.

In this presentation, Mary Purdy, MS, RDN, CD, will clarify some of the current controversial claims and present research on the potential negative health effects of environmental toxicants. She will provide useful strategies for minimizing exposure and improving the channels of detoxification through realistic dietary and lifestyle modifications, and examine the role of genetic variants and the use of supplementation.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:

  1. Define and discuss the process of detoxification/bio-transformation and its role in human health.
  2. Identify potential areas of exposure to toxicants in our environment and diet and their associated health risks.
  3. Implement dietary and lifestyle strategies for minimizing exposure and supporting optimal detoxification and elimination.
  4. Examine the risks of poorly-implemented detoxification protocols, as well as understand the contraindications and other important factors dietitians must consider when recommending a detoxification plan.

Mary Purdy, MS, RDN, CD holds a master’s degree from Bastyr University, where she currently teaches. Mary spent three years as adjunct professor at Bastyr and five years as a clinical supervisor at The Bastyr Center for Natural Health. From 2015-2019 she worked at the wellness company, Arivale, as a Coach and Clinical Education Lead, providing both training to coaches and nutrition and lifestyle counseling to clients using a personalized medicine approach that considered nutritional genetics, blood analyte biomarkers, microbiome, and salivary cortisol. Before her work with Arivale, Mary was in private practice for eight years working with hundreds of patients on a variety of health issues.

Mary is the co-author and creator of the revised “Environmental Toxins, Exposure, and Elimination” module of the Certificate of Training Program offered by The Academy Center for Lifelong Learning, and she co-authored the Diet Appendix for The Anti-Inflammatory Diet chapter for the fourteenth and fifteenth editions of Krause's “Food & The Nutrition Care Process.” She has presented at FNCE, the Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, the Austin Alliance of Registered Dietitians, and Integrative Medicine for the Underserved. Mary was the keynote speaker at Bastyr University’s commencement ceremony in 2019. She is also Past Chair of Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIIFM), host of the web series and podcast “Mary’s Nutrition Show,” and author of the book “Serving the Broccoli Gods.”
